Waipu Primary – School Readiness Information
We are excited about your child starting school with us at Waipu Primary. Currently we operate under a ‘continuous entry’ process. This means that children can start school on their 5th birthday. We currently have a consultation open to gather feedback about moving to ‘Cohort Entry’. Details are on our website and we welcome feedback.
So that we can best set your child up for a successful transition to school life we have a number of things that help us.
1. School Readiness Checklist: This is completed when your child is 4 ½ years old. It is designed to celebrate what they are able to do independently, and highlight the areas which need developing before they start school. Once completed, the checklist will need to be returned to school. School Readiness Checklist.pdf
Checklists are completed by whānau and the ECE to gain understanding from those perspectives. The documents are then discussed at an enrollment meeting with the principal.
2. School Visits: These are scheduled through your child’s classroom teacher. Usually students have 5 visits of increasing length prior to their 5th birthday.
3. Enrolment Meeting: This meeting is with parents/caregivers/whānau and the school principal. Items to discuss at the meeting include –
Strengths
Challenges
School Readiness Checklist
Learning and/or Behaviour
School Processes
The enrollment meeting would need to be scheduled in conjunction with the first or second school visit. Please make an appointment to see the Principal with the office team.
